Ok, so I have had a True Perc for a few months now and I wanted to go ahead and add another before it got to be too long by itself. I went back to the same LFS that original was bought from and asked for the same. Now that I have it home and in the tank, I have had more time to watch and inspect. I am afraid that maybe I didn't get the True Perc I was hoping for. He appears to have very similar color and black edges to the white, but its dorsal seems to be smaller and not have as many bones. It is my understanding that a true will have 10 and a false will have 9 and other than that it an at times be impossible to tell the difference.

Also.....the one that was previously in the tank is not very nice to the new one and I am wondering if it is because there may be a difference in species...besides the fact that of it being a new addition. I changed up my rock scape to see if that would help with his aggressiveness towards the new guy, but that seems to have not done much. They are at times hanging close to each other and they will both at time lay on their side and "shake" or vibrate.

Any tips, or suggestions are appreciated...will they be able to coexist if they are not the same (true v false). Do I just need to chill and all will probably be ok? Thanks!

trues and percs can coexist (and breed for that matter, as for as i know) is the one you got alot bigger then the old one? usually for them to get along they cant be the same size.

The aggression will be normal if they are the same species or not. If going for a pair, they really should have been added at the same time.
But the aggression is just dominance. They need to establish which one will be male, and which one female. The shaking and vibrating is a showing of submission and again is completely normal.
And yes, true and false can co-exist perfectly fine. In fact, this is how you create misbars ;)

Thanks guys.....oh and one more thing. Should I make issue with the LFS if I really think the new one is not a True (like I said I know if is almost impossible to tell)? I don't want to be "that guy", but there is a bit of a difference in the price, not much, but still a difference. My wife says I should just on principle alone that he charged me for something I didn't really get.
