It's fine to use. It's been around for ages.

Essentially all kalk should be simply calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2 otherwise know as pickling lime... Only difference I would forsee is purity but as long as its food grade or lab grade you are set.

thanks for the replies, i guess i should have been clearer with my question, i was wondering about the "purity" of it. It says it meets food grade standards, how does that compare to lab grade? or does it not really matter?

I prefer lab (Analytical Reagent) grade myself (ReefPure by Warner Marine). This is mainly important for those that use a Kalkstirrer vs a drip method. The drip method precipitates most heavy metals into the Kalk container as opposed to introducing it into the tank. Kalk stirrers will introduce some of these metals. I do not recommend the slurry method with cheaper grades of kalk.

Thanks inwall that's what i was wondering,it was my understanding that the heavy metals stayed on the bottom of the reactor kind of like oil and water if that analogy makes any sense? so as long as your not pumping slurry the metals stay at the bottom and are removed when you clean out the reactor vessel which i do monthly.
Is reefpure available in large quantities?

    That's a very good analogy.

I know Jon will repackage his Phosar in larger quantities so he might do that for Kalkwasser too. You can ask him. www.WarnerMarine.com - Warner Marine

I like good ole Mrs Wages... cheap and food grade... I am not as concerned about the metals as A. I drip, and B. Most salt mixes contain considerably more tramp metals in it than kalk, and you base your tank on your salt mix...
