effects of high salinity?

i got my refract calibrated. and my salinity is at 1.029 . gradully lowering to 1.026. just wonder what are if any ill affects on corals, soft,lps,sps at salinity levels this high.

 

Not at that level many places in the world run in the range of 1.034 even its alwys changing just pull out a few gallons and replace it with F/W

 

inverts would love 1.034!

 

im kinda nervous about lowering it, since my corals/inverts are all doing good at this level for the past year, and my reef parims(calcium,kh...) never seem to drop very low even when not adding any supps for a while. Wondering if the higher salt levels keep other parims higher as well. do think ill have to dose more to get the levels i want with a lower salinity?

also do higher salinity levels affect the amout of oxygen the water can hold?

also im wondering if higher salinity effects undesirable algae growth?
not really the higher salinity, but using synthetic salt mix in higher amounts. could this add more phosphate,even most say no phosphate, but thats with the amount of salt used to get to 1.021 usually. maybe the phosphate in there mix becomes more detectable when more salt is used.:-/

do you use tap water or ro/di?

 

i use one of those api filters, with carbon and deionizing beads,.

 

a HIGH SALINITY LEVEL WILL REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF DISSOLVED OXYGEN IN YOUR WATER!
IT ALSO HAS AN EFFECT ON THE AMOUNT OF CALCIUM CARBONATE THAT CORALS WILL PRECIPITATE FOR USE AS THEY GROW, IN OTHERWORDS THE GROWTH RATE WILL SLOW DOWN!

 

thank you thats what i was wondering, i knew it had to affect things in some way. my corals grow pretty fast as it is, cant wait to see them after i get things in order.

 

Just reduce the salinity level slowly to reduce the chance of stressing out livestock and microorganisms!
