I called my power company last week and asked them what my rate is... cuz my bill has been high since I started the aquarium.
They said .13 per kwh. It didn't make sense with the math so today I called them again and they said .18 per kwh.
That was more in line with what I was calculating.
I have a very inefficient home.. poor insulation, 35 year old air conditioner, Old, old Odyssea lighting ballast, 3 pumps that draw over 300 Watts, 500 W heater. Someday I'll upgrade to more power efficient.

Anyhoo I shopped around and got .112 cents per kwh from Champion energy( locked in for a year).. If you're in TX it may be worth looking into.. It's gonna chop $100 off of my bill. Been running about $350 last couple months cuz it's been cold a lot.
    cheers.

Wow, you can pick who you want? We have about 3 in my local area, except we cant pick who we want. Certain companies run an area. Fla. is not cheap with elec. but water is almost free.

only one in illinois. Well we have 2 in area but the nazis tell us we can only use the one we are closest to. I am luck enough to live near the better plant unfortunatly some of the places I use to manage were in the expensive plants zone.

Yeah, keep that in mind when your states starts talking about deregulation. We have a bunch of choices but even the cheapest is sky high. Average is 40% more than surrounding states. I'm from Virginia originally and when my dad whines about electricity rates a tell him I don't wanna hear it. So much for capitalism in the power department... bring back regulated power please.
Florida is still one of the highest.

We recently switched here. But something about this being able to choose your energy company - it doesn't have anything to do with what plant is closest. Our power companies are really just energy brokers. They are all just buying the energy on a contracted price from the same plants as their competition. They pick and choose the plants thus enabling them to claim things like green or "uses more nuclear" or whatever.

The lower rates come from that broker having a better contract. It's an interesting business model. Add the "middle-man", increase rates, provide jobs. I'm not saying it's right or wrong though. There's pro's and con's like anything else.

We only have 1 electric company but they are also producers and sellers to other electrical companies in the western US..

My last bill the rate was 0.05980for the first 755 kw/h and then 0.07210 for 108 kw/h.. The base use for my size apartment is 755 kw/h so anything above that is a premium to encourage conservation.

Our electric is pretty green, all hydro generated. Better then coal or natural gas I suppose.

I tryed to bid a job for state run facility but state still owes them 60,000 from 6 to 7 month ago. It is sad when state can't pay its own bills. How does it expect to survive. There is already been talks of so. il. becoming its own state. Don't think it will happen but any thing is possible in this economy. This is not political just stated the truth. Was also told not to stick your neck out in any finacial situations cause this is just the start. I hope something gets done or we are all in trouble. sorry if this offend anyone not ment to. peace love and all that.
