when you say fan worm, do you mean feather duster type?

they are filter feeding inverts that use the fans/ feathers to trap food particles from the water column
so in an ultra clean reef tank the danger is starvation

they will take some of the finer liquid food supplements which should be fed using a turkey baster or syringe or pippette , allowing the flow to carry food to them dont get to close or they will retract into the tube and thus be unable to capture any food you release

I have kept some for up to 3 years by deliberately target feeding them in the above manner
