i traded a torch coral for a candy cane and a feather duster. The feather duster is growing out of a crevice in a large piece of LR. I dont have enough room to put the whole rock in my tank. Can i break off the feather duster way down at the base with a screw driver or something? Will it live? What should i do?

I would not do what you described crusty - once handled the worm will go as deeply into its tube as it can so you would probably just get empty tube

what you could try is to chisel some of the excess rock away- as far from the duster as its possible to get

    +1 on what Steve said.
I'd just break off the excess rock.
Trying to pull it off or using a screwdriver could damage it.

Crusty - can you see the other side of the tube when you turn the rock over?
if so thats ideal as it means you can work out where to break the rock without damaging the tube
if it where mine, I would break away small areas from the rock extremities until I had a size that would fit in the tank

alternative - if you have rock already in the tank with no life forms on it, then maybe moving 1 piece out in order to accomodate this full rock is an option you could consider

A good way to try to break it would be start with a sawsall and drill so that the breaks will somewhat go the way you want and try a chizzel or a brick hammer to make cleaner breaks.
