I am new to the reef tank world. My 50 gallon tank has been going for 6 weeks. I have hermits, snails, 1 cleaner shrimp and 1 fire shrimp.
The cleaner shrimp is great-settled in no problem but the fire shrimp sits in its little 'cave' and only nentures out slightly when food enters the tank.
Is this normal and will it just take time or do I have a 'shy' shrimp

    Normal.
Just the personality of your shrimp.
You will find the same with cleaner shrimp.
Sucks to because the fire shrimp is really cool and stands out to anyone who walks past your tank.

I agree. Each shrimp can have a very different personality. Im sure that after a while it will venture out into the tank more, but untill then it is just getting used to its surroundings. But you never know for sure.

have had one for 2yrs now. only comes out at night. very sensitive to light - even the red ones that everyone says they can't see. Dang good shrimp though. good scavenger, and cleans 65% of my fish. Cool to look at and not too territorial.

I've got 1 in my 210... I think. I see it about once every 2-3 months and he has been in there for over 2 years.

The Fire shrimp, in my opinion are the most shy of the shrimp species dedicated to a reef environment! I hardly see mine at all except in between the rocks or at feeding time. My Cleaner shrimp are out quite frequently as well as my Peppermint shrimp. Don't worry about it! The only thing, with the amount of money we pay for these beautiful shrimp, it would be nice if we saw a return on our investment!

Fire shrimp are from deeper waters so they won't spend much time out in the open...bright lights...of our tanks. Only time I ever see mine are when the urge to feed overcomes the urge to stay out of the light.

Mine does the same thing, sits under his rock all day and sometimes the fish go and see him for a service! He very, very rarely comes out and that is only at feeding time.

    Hi everybody

I am new to this site looks like a great place to discuss reefing ,anyways I have 2 fire shrimps that are out alot maybe they feel more secure in pairs they even climb on my arms when I clean the tank . They are tough suckers chased away my cleaner shrimp from their hiding places as soon as I put them in the tank.
