Just a warning. I had three and they did great for months. Then they all went to war and died over a weekend. I'm not a believer in hard and fast rules when it comes to fish, but I wanted to put in a word of caution.

I was searching for info on firefish and this thread came up on google, hence it getting re-born....

Up until one of my orange firefish carpet surfed today, I had 2 purple and 2 orange, all 4 in a 75g tank, all living under the same rock together, and all interacting like best friends.

The reason I was looking them up, is that I don't know what to do about the situation with only 1 orange, and was wondering if I could put several new ones in, because I know darn well putting in an odd single new one would result in disaster. My other issue is, I am worried about how the purples will respond to the now single orange one now that the mate is gone.

+1. I had 2 helfrichi & 2 purple firefish getting along fine in my 85... till one helfrichi randomly died. A while later, ich struck, which took the other helfrichi.

The two purples survived without a problem (they seem to be pretty hardy).

I later tried adding 2 of the red (regular?) firefish. This went well for about 2 weeks, then the purples opted for war... and won. During said battles, one purple apparently established dominance over the other, and now chases & nips at the other daily... this has gone on for months.
