I am just getting my first algae bloom. There is green hair like stuff growing from the glass and brown stuff forming on my sand and rocks. Should i be trying to get rid of this? I have a mag float for the glass. What should i be doing during this time?

I'm assuming your tank is cycling? If it is in the cycle process, sounds like a diatom bloom. That's a good sign you're nearing the end.

Just let it run its course. If you want you can use the scrapper on the glass. As the cycle progresses, the algae and diatoms will eventually go away.

Diatoms are usually brown. If it is truly Hair Algae, Prepare for Battle. Can you post pics??

Not when they grow on the glass. They can have a brown base with green, fern-like tips (Had this when my cycle was ending). GHA doesn't grow all over the glass either

good luck with the first algae bloom, my diatom lasted about a month, and i've been having the GHA bloom and small cyano for about a week now and is getting pretty bad, i can't wait until it dies off. Good luck!

I had the exact same thing when my cycle was ending. Diatoms all over the sand and rocks and diatoms with green fern like things on the glass. All of it cleared up on its own in about 2 or 3 weeks. You're almost done, yay!! Congratulations!

wow that GHA is really taking over i'm in that phase too but my clean up crew is really doing a good job on the glass, they haven't gotten anything on the rocks yet.

Not sure if your tank is still to young for CUC or not but i've had mine for 2 days and they've been eating away at it, sure is a pain though and looks bad
