I'm curious as to what lighting is required for fish only. After reading I'm learning that it seem's like it's basically whatever I prefer. My tank doesnt have a canopy with it yet so I'm thinking about DIY LED. Just curious what to buy for it or if there's any recommendations

What size tank? For fish only it doesn't seem to matter much! Whatever you prefer! Led's are nice as you won't have to change the bulbs every year!

    +1^^
But odds are the coral bug will eventually Bite you! so good lights might be good to have, in which Case, I'm 100% Led either DIY or Prebuilt, just dont cheap out, cause then you might have well just bought t8s lol. Make sure you do some research, and just see what fits into your budget, and what you really want out of your tank long term

Then You can get away with just about anything in that case I would think, it all depends on preference, Like marineland led lights, are fairly cheap I dont know about quality, but They might be an energy efficient option

well if not for corals and is definitely going to be fish only and you want LEDs id recommend looking into a bridgelux kit from aquastyle to save money and still have a nice LED look
