I recently started running open top with the new light. I want to build some sort of lid as already I have had a fish jump. I was either thinking going with Peredhil's idea with the eggcrate walls, or just lay eggcrate across the top. I was wondering what you guys think? Will I lose spectrum from my light if I run the eggcrate across the top? I think running it straight up there is still a possibility of fish jumping over it unless its pretty high like 4+"

    What do you guys suggest?

I have eggcrate across my 55 and have had no problems. I lost a six line wrasse and put the eggcrate on soon after. I am not quite sure on the light loss, but I would say I have not lost any.

I just cut it to fit my tank, cut out for all my equiptment (overflow powercords, ect...) and layed it on top.

You do lose SOME light just because there is something between the light and the surface of your water..but its not near enough to make anything unhappy. I had eggcrate over my tank when i ran pc's and my LPS and all other corals still thrived.

it's not called "light diffuser" just for the heck of it :)
Try it and see if you like it. It's cheap enough.

Yeah you lose a tiny bit of light using egg crate, look for 1/4" pond netting and use it with a DIY screen frame kit and use the netting instead of regular screen, it's the best solution IMO. It doesn't block any light really and is actually better at keeping fish in the tank.
I've had 2 fish jump through egg crate so far on my current tank. I'm not ever using egg crate again, it's not small enough.

I cut out the area where the light is over. the light above its usually enough to keep fish from jumping. And if they still persist they only have a small area to make it out of and usually end up bouncing off the light right back into the tank.
