I need some help choosing my next fish for my 120 reef. Currently I've got a Two Spot Bristletooth (Kole) Tang, a Red Sea Sailfin Tang and a Royal Gramma. I want to put in one more active, colorful, swimming fish.

    Considered and ruled out:

    - Wrasses of various sorts. I love wrasses, very cool, colorful fish, but I have an open-topped tank and wrasses tend to be jumpers.

    - Pygmy Angels. I've got a fair number of stony corals and it's hit or miss whether they get nipped or not.

    - Flame Hawk. They can be a little destructive with shrimp and also don't really swim.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've semi-ruled them out. I like to have a host for clowns and I'm not sure I want to put an anenome in this tank. I'm not completely ruling them out, just not sold on them yet.

Hello rocket, you say you have ruled out Pygmy angels however I think your concern is unwarranted as far as Coral Beauties are concerned. I have mostly all soft Corals and keep a Beauty and it is more concerned with the rock and sides of the tank. They may nip a coral once in a blue moon but it is rare. Another choice may be Pajama Cardinals. Either a pair or even three. I find them difficult but like many other things in this hobby, many don't.

I have a sixline that is fun to watch, like Iraf says, and even though you don't want clowns without a host, they don't need them of course. I have two maroons in one tank that don't even care about the anemone's available and a big clarkii in the fowlr tank that is my favorite fish with the most personality, and no host!

Honestly if I had it to do all over again I'd go with no clowns, their really boring mean ass fish
Mine never swim more than 6" from the anemone and their mean as all get out they attack everything that comes close and if you need to work on the tank their biting you the whole time

I don't have that problem with any of my clowns, in fact, my maroons are the biggest pussies of all my fish when they are supposed to be so mean. Maybe it has to do with the fact that none of my clowns host anything, except maybe an area of the tank but they barely defend it...

    a psuedochromis. maybe a fridmani or a
    springeri
    Springeri - Aquacultured (Springerii Pseudochromis)
not the most active fish but will swim around some if not bullied by tankmates. even though you have ruled out wrasses, i think you should reconsider they are the exact fish you are describing and many people keep them in open top tanks myself included.
