My sons 29 gal tank has 2 clowns a b&w damsel and a blue chromis. The clowns bully the damsel. This may just be an isolated case but hes the one that gets picked on in there.
I personaly wouldnt buy damsels from the store (sons tank came stocked off of craigslist) because to me I think there are more intresting fish available.

if you were doing a variety of fish, I'd stay away from the damsels too, but since you're looking at a damsel/chromi only mix (clowns are damsels), I think one of the first two choices is better.

In my experience with damsels (I have Osc clowns, and had a YTDamsel and a Blue Damsel) the clowns are far more aggressive than any damsel i've ever had.

My Royal Gramma (glad he's gone) was just about as aggressive as the clowns too.

I think your last option is actually your most aggressive option...

Yeah, even around it would be cool. All of my clowns either stayed in the very front of the tank like touching the glass or in the corner floating up and down. and i have had a lot of clowns. and in more than half of those tanks, there werent a fish in the tank that would discourage the clown to go near the rockwork (and in some cases there were no other fish). hmmm

I never stated that chromis were agressive. I think you will see that the yellow tail is an aggressive fish. They make a cool fish just not one suited in my tank. I had a yellow tail and the blue in my tank in the beginning the yellowtail died but both of them bulllied everything including my clown fish. I have 5 black and white clowns and a maroon goldstriped clown and the maroon is somewhat agressive and is still bullied by the damsel. The thing with fish is never are two the same I have a hippo that goes to the powerhead and turns and shoots across the tank. I have watched it do it for hours and know its just being a goof. There is a possibility that you will get a fish with a non agressive personality it can happen my clowns arent and others say they are. Just throwing in my .02

I have a b&w and an orange ocellaris. Both of them swim in the rockwork, maybe mine are just special. They don't spend all day in there but I do see them go in and out occasionally.

Could it be that they have gotten to know that when your hand comes near it's feeding time. Once mine see my hand going to the top of the tank, they are all over it looking for food. They haven't gone as far as nipping me yet though.

Ya, this is not too common but in my dads 40 gallon this ONE clown always tries to bite me when i stick my hand more than 6 inches in the tank. He wouldnt stop until i went out of the tank. but thats the only time ive ever seen this. I guess all of these factors and questions that im asking all depends on the individual fish, not the species :-/
