I have a rubber tube connected to a hard, smooth plastic stiff tube. I know most of you would say i need to secure it somehow but i did this all over and i had to wrestle with each fitting for 10 minutes just for it to go on (for my phosphate reactor) and the maximum flow of the pump is only like 87 GPH. Can i leave it? do you think it will leak? Heres a pic:

Hard for me to tell in the pic. If your worried about it you can use a HD wire tie to secure it. If it was that hard to get on I probably wouldnt worry about it

Thanks for the quick response. And remember, the pump is only 87 gph so maybe i wont worry about it... idk i gotta hear a few more opinions first.

Im running a mini-jet 606 pump on my reactor at 87 gph. I felt for the cost of 2 wire ties (maybe 5 cents) it was worth it to me for piece of mind not to flood my house.

    Take a coffee cup
    Fill with water
Heat in microwave until very hot
Dip end of hose into water for 15 seconds
    install hose before it cools
allow to cool before applying water pressure

This little trick works like a charm. Allows the hose to expand just enough to slip on easily and holds like a rock.

I have my return pump hooked up like that, just jammed on, and been like that for a year and never worried about it. Well until now lol. I don't think it will be a problem.

If both tubes are soft, then applying a strap, compression fitting, or plastic tie of any sort to the outside will accomplish nothing.

Personally I wouldn't chance it. Any flirtation with leakage normally succeeds.

If you could find a rigid piece of collar material of some sort (like a small length of hose barb cut to about 1/4" for example) to slip inside the smaller tube, then a compression fitting to the outside will accomplish the task at hand. It's very small insurance to pay for a good night's sleep.

Don't mess with halfmeasures in this hobby. Mistakes tend to be pricey.

RS I agree with you 100%. I suggested the WT due to the fact he stated
(I have a rubber tube connected to a hard, smooth plastic stiff tube).

Now that you've twisted and pulled with all your might, my suspicion would be that your action didn't make the joint stronger. :-/

It all comes down to one question. "Are you satisfied that this won't come apart in the middle of the night, or while you're at school, or on vacation?"

Your answer to that will determine how you proceed.
