So I was reading this or last months issue of pratical fish keeping and they had in there that flame angels are not good to have as reef fish. What experience does some of you have with this fish. Reef fish Yes or no. If no what do they nip on or eat coral wise.

Dwarf Angelfish are a hotly debated issue on reef safe or not reef safe. In my experience, my Coral Beauty has not touched a thing. However, some people say they can nip at corals, and some even say that they can tear up a reef. Still others say that they only touch a certain type of coral or some combination (like SPS/LPS/Softies/Polyps). It really comes down to which specific specimen you get. Some will nip coral and some won't. I personally believe that it is more common to get a reef safe specimen, but be careful because there certainly are some that will be a problem.

My verdict: Reef safe with a backup plan.

Yep. That way with all the dwarfs, and many other species. I have a singapore dwarf angel in my tank right now, and so far, so good. But it all depends on the particular fish. Some dwarfs will be model citizens, and some won't. I also believe that chances are much more HIGHER that you will be safe. A lot of the "with caution" and what not concerning reef safe comes from the retailers. Retailers are going to be much more likely to try anything to cover their own, even with just a SLIGHT chance. But it is still a chance.

I've been wondering the same thing. Heard they can nip clam mantles too.

I've got a Flame angel for over a year and a half and I have never seen it nip on any of my sps, lps, shrooms, zoas. I also know of at least 5 other reefers out hear without any problems with their flames in their reef tanks.

I think that every so often there is an outlier that eats coral and clams. This occasional specimen has given all of them a bad rap.

I've heard of flame angels nipping... but seems to be very rare. I think the best way to describe them is they are potentially non reef safe... or "with caution". Everyone I've talked to that has them say they have no problems at all. Obviously there has to be someone out there that has one that nips.

I am considering taking the risk of getting one. I just hope I could catch it if it does start to tear up some corals.

I've always wanted one... I say go for it. It seems the chances of getting a good one are pretty high.

Someone here had one that tore up his clams. I can't remember who for the life of me.
But I would go for it if you want one. The only thing I would suggest is to get one through a good LFS instead of ordering one. That way it wont be a hassle returning it if by the slight chance it does cause problems.
