Hi everyone my tank is currently cycling and one of the hitch hikers on my live rock was a flame scallop. It was doing fine when I left for work but then when I got back home it looks like its insides were put through a blender. What could have caused this the tank doesn't have any fish in it yet? Also, should I remove the scallop or will it help the cycle? I'd really appreciate any help or advice.

Not to be negative Nancy, but it is probably dead. FLame scallops are extremely hard to keep in tanks that ARE cycled. They need constant feedings of phytoplankton, and even for the very experianced reefer they usually do not last. Not positive it is dead, and not sure if you should keep it in. Probably not, but again not positive. Someone else will chime in to answer that question.

Eh If there is no other livestock in the tank, I would just leave it :) Let it help build up the cycle

Thank you. It is definitely dead... poor guy. I had read (once I figured out that it was in there and ID'd it with my LFS) that they were very hard to keep. I guess the newbie in me thought mine would be the exception!! There is a little crab in there also that came on the rock, could he be the culprit even though he is about the size of one of my fingernails?

What does the crab look like? You should try to ID him. There are some crabs that are bad, so now would be a good time to get him out.

I'm not sure what it is - I'd start a thread in the ID forums so someone can help you!
