so i just got a ro unit from spectrapure and used it yesterday to fill some jugs. Do you need to flush all the water out of the system when your finished using it, or do you just leave the water in it and let it run out next time. I read in the manual, there is an optional flush kit you can buy. Do i need to purchase this or is there another way to remove the water?

Leave the water in it. the membrane and DI resins must stay damp or wetted or they go bad. Use the unit at least every 7 to 10 days if possible, if not there are directions for long term storage. Store the unit in a dark, climate controlled place like a closet or under the sink away from heat, cold and direct lighting.

On the topic of flushing the membrane regularly. I've heard that there hasn't really been a good study on whether this actually helps improve membrane lifespan or not. Anyone have any good sources/info on whether this is actually true or not?

You are correct. No studies that I am aware of and I have been looking for the same thing.
Until someone can show definitively that they actually improve life span or perfromance or both I can't see their benefit. Opening a 1/4" ball valve for a minute does not provide sufficient time nor scouring velocity to clean a membrane which has been accumulating solids for hours or days. For one when you open the valve you reduce the pressure so have lost much or the energy needed to scour the surface. The theory makes sense but they need to work on the implementation.
