If you're not going to have a sump, then I would at least build a raised shelf from egg crate to put the corals on and put the live rock under the shelf. You *may* be able to get away without the sump, but if you do, you'll probably be doing a LOT more water changes than normal.

If you don't use a filter (which means you won't be using carbon, phosphate remover, nitrate remover, or anything else) be prepared for slightly less clean looking water. I doubt you'll have much luck keeping SPS corals in this tank, but I'd bet soft corals like xenia would thrive. In my experience, they can adapt and easily thrive in slightly dirtier water. I definitely would do the HOB skimmer like sollie7 mentioned. In a 10 gallon tank, you'll probably just want to stick with 1 koralia nano powerhead. Anything more than that may be too much. I'd also throw some culpera in the bottom of the tank near the live rock to help with phosphates and nitrates since you won't be using chemical media. Like I stated before... be prepared for a lot of water changes :) And keep in mind, when you do a small water change on a 10 gallon, you're changing out a large percentage of the water. Corals don't tolerate change too well... if you change 20% of the water and the new water you're putting in is 4 or 5 degrees off, or the salinity is a few points off, or anything else is different from what it was before the water change, that could be very bad for the coral. It's actually a lot harder to maintain a smaller tank since conditions in the tank can change a lot very quickly and having a healthy saltwater tank is all about avoiding change.

yea now that i think about it you should prob get a small hang on filter and just run some carbon in there

or atleast just run the carbon after adding freshly cut frags

ya ok so here are my plans so far, i will use a small filter( probubly the one they gave me in the kit that i will get) and raise my egg crate up on a platform and put live rock with either chaeto or caulpera stuffed in the rocks. and once i save enough money i can buy a skimmer
