So I will be returning from vacation mid June and I have decided to get a pair of black clowns because I want to try to breed them so I was looking at anemones and frogspawn caught my eye. So my tank params are nice but my tank has been up for a few months. I have a 4 bulb t5ho fixture for around 220 watts if all 4 are running. I don't wanna run all 4 because my fixture gets so hot, so I would run 2.... Is that going to be enough for frogspawn to grow? I would replace my bulbs with some new ati bulbs.

    Any advice is appreciated

I think that should be plenty, I have a TON of light, but my frog is in the SB and partially under an overhang, the part under the overhang does better than the part out.

The clowns may/may not host it, and can kill a froggy, but I've seen many do it successfully! MAke sure ya read up on raising clown fry, it seems rather difficult, but it would be fun as heck! Good luck;)

I only have a 2-bulb fixture with stock lighting on my 29 gallon and my frogspawn is doing great on the bottom of my tank. You should be fine :)

My spawns are in a 20gal (16" tall) with my 4 T5 bulb fixture and LED's (about 100w all together) on all day and it is doing fantastic! I use to have them under crappy screw in type PC's (total 40w) in a 10gal and they still did great. Weren't as pretty as they are now, kindda dull looking, but they did grow. So, I think even under 2 T5's they will still look great and color up nicely. Before I went to a 4 bulb T5 and led fixture I had only 2 T5 fixture and the one green tipped spawn started turning more pink in the polyps and then at the base of each polyp started getting green streaks! You should see it now under the 4 bulb and 32 LEDs.. OH MY GOD! It will be fine under the 2 T5s and will look beautiful after a while I think. These guys can acclimate to pretty much any lighting level IME. Same with the hammers and torches (I have one of each) As long as you get a spawn that is at LEAST 3 or 4 times the size of the clowns I don't think you should have too many problems with the clowns being too rough and klilling the spawn. I have 2 spawns for my Oscelaris, both about 5" across... she darts back and forth between the 2. I even have a hammer and my torch close by but she loves the spawns! They have been hosting her for a good 8 months now with no problems. Just make sure you get a good sized spawn to up your chances of success ;) good luck!!

Awesome, yea I'm doing all of my research on how to raise the fry and it does pose its challenges but I think I may get it after a while, I'm not betting on the first attempt to b a huge success.

What bulbs do you guys recommend? I want the ones with the highest par so my frogspawn will do great.

My clowns won't get near my frog torch hammer or elegance coral! They are goofy critters!

I think ATI or giesen are the best from what I've read, but I'm not sure, I'm an led guy!

If stick smith shows back up on this forum, shoot him a pm about raising clowns, he's pretty knowledgable!

So I'm reading conflicting things on the Internet, is frogspawn a coral or anemone??

If its a coral will it provide any protection for the fry or will it eat them?

A frogspawn is a Coral. An LPS. They have a hard skeleton which the head/s and polyps will retreat into at night or if the spawn gets bumped or touched by something it normally wouldn't be. It cannot move. Frogspawn won't eat the fry as far as I know. But I have never bred clowns before. I wouldn't think there would be an issue with the frogspawn and the fry. It would act as similar protection as an anemone, but justn't sting half as bad as a nem. Sometimes it can take a few weeks for the frogspawn to be comfortable with having the clownfish at such close quarters. But if your clowns are gentle and slow enough and the frogspawn is large enough there will be a nice gentle transition for the frogspawn to start hosting the clowns.
