It's probably going to corrode and run hot, and cause a lot of problems. Forget about it.

Get a pump designed for aquaria.

Those pumps have coatings and other things to make them fuel resistant, I wouldnt want to find out if that means they are saltwater compatable.

plus you would have to power it which might turn out to be harder than thought. I am guessing they run at 12 volts?

I dont know that an aqualifter will have the head pressure to pump from a basement to the first floor?

Aqualifters don't pump against ANY head. I've tried using them for ATO's and they never worked well, or lasted very long if they did. Look around for pumps on sale...you can find something that fits the bill without breaking the bank. Your biggest issue is going to be head loss, but at least for an ATO, you don't need much flow.

ahh sorry, missed the part about how high it has to go. agree a aqualifter wont work. although i run one for my ATO and it works perfect. you will have to get a pretty good sized pump to have it go from the basement.

is it pumping saltwater or fresh ro/di water? with saltwater definitely not it will corrode more than likely....with fresh ro/di water maybe but then you have to see if the shaft and impeller have any metal that would touch the water and make sure the bearings are sealed so no lubricant/oils touch the water...it could be possible but i dont know about the risk, research into the design a little better it may be a good fit
