This might sound odd to some people but i have a question on maintainence. my first sump/fuge has been running now for just over a month. in it i have 3 mangroves, some cheato, and red gracillia. I am starting to notice its getting kinda nasty in the fuge section....red Cyano on the glass, aptasia, and even some xenia sprouting up on some rubble.

should i be cleaning the fuge area? or am i wanting it to become a swamp? i know the purpose of the fuge is to keep the nutrients down and keep algae from growing in the DT. just need some clairification

If it's not something you show off I'd just kill of the aip's. There's more of a chance of them spreading to your DT then anything else. The more stuff growing in there the better really..even cyano...yes cyano. It'll help eat the excess nutrients. When I had the algae scrubber running I had the dreaded bryopsis growing on it's screen but never in my tank. Cyano grew freely in the low flow areas as well. A good fuge looks like a swamp. :)

Also look in your tank really good! You don't want them in your tank, you'll eventually have 1 million of them lol ;)

I'd kill the aip too because of the risk of it spreading to the DT.

But, Calfo actually mentions using aip in a tank of its own as a fuge-type filter, though.

Yeah.... KILL the aip!!! It took over my tank until I killed it with a mix of vinigar and hot water.... but that can certainly prevented. So take the advice of the other members!!

just want to check to see if my aptasia killing method is acceptable. using a hypodermic needle i inject lemon juice into the aptasia. will this method cause more aptasia to sprout up in other places? the aptasia in my sump is on the glass so i was going to use a razor blade a scrape it off carefully not to cut it.
