I just went though my first sump/fuge setup, not to bad. For size, well Bigger is still better... You need to see what you have for space and go from there.

Plumbing depends on whether or not you have a HOB overflow, drilled tank or what.

In either case you can get tubing or PVC and plumb it in.

There are many tank build threads here to review. That is where I got my info from to build mine.

    \Good luck

Good rule of thumb is 1/10 the size of display tank. Bigger is not always better here because the tank will only have so much nutrients to feed the fuge. Just like having enough fertalizer for 1 acre and trying to spread it over 10 acres.

My refugium is just an extension of my main tank!
I have terrible luck keeping Royal Gramma's in my tank so...his home has been in my 3gallon hang on refugium with miracle mud, caulerpa and live rock! Remember that a refugium can be used for a multitude of scenarios, from an extension of your main tank, observatory, safe haven for small fish and delicate invertebrates etc.

there's plenty of room under the tank for 20-30 gal tank and I have a HOB overflow, what do you need to put in a fuge? Do you just feed watrer form the sump to the fuge to the tank? Sorry for all the questions but I'm want my tank in tip top before I start putting corals in it.

You want to T off the OF from the display tank and put a valve after it so you can slow the flow down to the fuge.

How slow in GPH? T off the OF to the fuge and then to the sump?

Here is a good site to give you an idea what you should do.

    Melevsreef.com | Acrylic Sumps & Refugiums

I have some pics of my sump on my thread. I have it set up to do the fuge thang, but just have not completed my plumbing and procurement of algae. There are much better sump/fuge combos on this site than mine. But it's a start. You can see where I have "T"'d off the main to my fuge and have used ball valves to control flow. I have an external overflow setup. I have two OFs on the back of the tank but only one running right now.
