Hi all - I just installed my GFCI for my new tank. That was a bit of a bear working with a tight space and hard wires but I finally got it on.

I live in a really old house and there was not a ground wire, so I ran the ground wire off of the GFCI to the mounting screw and against the plate. I was told this was ok.

Anyone know of problems with this or am I ok? :-/

im not a qualified electrician matt , but that does sound like it will be fine. main thing is youve grounded the receptacle.

Is the plate grounded? Guess that would my concern is to make sure the "plate" is grounded somewhere. What I did in a house wired like yours was run a wire down to the nearest pipe, but this house had basement so it was easy. Maybe someone with a little more electrical experience will chime in.

Thanks all.. The mounting screw goes into the electrical box which is metal so the thinking was that would ground it. :-/

Red and white ? is their a copper ground leg from the panel box to ground the old metal box in the old wiring ? Unless the old work box is grounded then you have no ground at all then at best this would be a not so good ground really if the box was grounded . The new receptacle should be grounded to the panel buss bar for the ground leg as with the white wire should be on a ground buss bar also how old is the panel box ?

Red as a rule is used for a hot carrier for a 2 way switch or such But if its that old who knows are the red and blk wire in the same shielding ? and is there maybe a bare copper wire snipped off or connected to the metal box somewhere and you did not see it maybe ? Is this a dedicated circuit maybe or are there other receptacles on the branch ? is it old B-X cable

    Same shielding.

I did not see a copper wire. I don't believe there was one in there.

All the living room outlets are on the same fuse. The fuse was labeled for outlets. I don't know what B-X cable is. :-/

Just plugged in a fan and tried it out. It works as it should. Test button kills it. Reset button starts it up again.
