I used an AquaClear 30 for the pump. It was left over from when I retired one side of my undergrael filter in my Discus tank to allow my plants to grow better.

That is an interesting suggestion to mount the filter vertically. I try to keep the tank as quiet as possible and the extra splashing was noticable. What I did to keep the water from flowing over the top of the carbon was stuff filter pads into the top of the bottle. This keeps the carbon nicely filling the entire bottle. The bottle also wedges nicely between the skimmer and the tank so I havent had to make the mouting perminant.

When I replace the bottle next time I will probably go with carbon and something else. I dont have any phosphate problems since I added the fuge but I have about 3 cups of carbon on a 55. According to other posts here that is 2 to 3 times what is needed.

As for the hole and the pictures. I had to take them off my phone because every time I would show someone a tank picture it looked like I had pictures of something illigal.
