My uv glass on my lighting fixture recently shattered after about 2 years of having it. I pulled out all the glass out of the fish tank i could reach but there are still shards of glass in there. Do you think i will have to take apart the whole tank to get the pieces of glass or should i not and let it burry it self in the sand? No one in the tank seems to be bothered or anything but it kinda bothers me. Any suggestions or to why it might of shattered into a million pieces????

p.s. I just e-mailed the supplier to see if he could send me another piece of glass as quick as he can. I will not be able to turn on half of the light because the uv light will burn everything. Luckily, the other half did not explode and i still have a little light.

Wow, that really...sucks. Not to sound like a jerk. I would be taking that 'scape apart in search of the glass. Be sure to where gloves!

what's the problem with the glass? I know some folks intentionally put coke/beer bottles, etc. in their tanks... Is this glass different somehow?

    Bummer....

It probably shattered because of heat stress...perhaps it got splashed when hot, or maybe it had a weakness that was there but got worse over time with the heating and cooling, like a windshield will do.

As to the glass in the tank, personally I'd leave it. The biggest danger is to you, in case you forget about it and stick your hand in the gravel and cut yourself, but even if you try to get all the little peices out, you'll never get them all.

I agree. The fish have not touched it and it has done no harm. Why even mess with it? The seller (togdogseller) told me that he will e-mail the vender and see if he can get me one. Hopefully, it will go as planned and they will have the piece and everything will be back to normal. haha :)

Karma sent to you guys! :)

Nope. Its just shards of glass which could cut a fish or goby who sifts through the sand. I think i am just going to leave it. I got most of the glass which was visible, out of the tank. When people walk by my fish tank and see glass, i am just going to tell them that there was a shipwreck! ;D

Ugh that is stressful. The good news is that in a few years you should have some sea-glass! :)

You are not running the bulb without UV protection now are you?
I know first hand what that can do after finding out some glass that came with a pendant was NOT UV filtered. It is not good. You will kill corals directly under the lamp and severely damage others and your fish. This happened to me - read the first half of my build thread.
TURN OFF THE LIGHT UNTIL YOU GET NEW UV GLASS.

UV protection is 100% necessary for your fish, corals, and most importantly - your eyes. Your eyes can be damaged without a UV shield. Shut it down if it is still running.

haha. Yes, i did notice that and luckily I knew this before you told me! I think it was running for like 30 seconds without UV protection. No corals or fish got hurt or killed by the falling glass thankfully! I have no idea if the bulb has a filter that blocks out the uv rays but i don't want to take any chances. I know for a fact that the glass that is scattered throughout my tank does thats why i never really cared if the bulb had it.
