What about the protein skimmer? Wouldnt' that do all the gas exchange needed? I bought the glass top kit for my ALA 75 gallon, it was only 39.00....Only thing I seem to have a problem with is the opaque plastic strip used as the hinge...makes a shadow...

It would be way to unsafe for me to not have the glass tops...but Id prefer not to have them in the way...

Im going more to semi-reef tank .....I like a few fish swimming around too....and my snowflake might decide to run away from home!!!

    good luck hoodoo!!

my LFS has a top on his reef tank as well not glass but an oak with a liner in it so what he did to take care of the heat and gas exchange was to build a quiet computer fan on the back. The fan he used was 120 volt fan, and if you get a good quality fan they are virtually silent

They are good articles - I prefer about.com article but lacks the specific information about the gas exchange. I think it is minimal since there is an headspace between the water and the glass along with moving water from the power heads. Now that I am curious about this (I never gave it any thought before now) I am going to do some more investigation about this concept of gas exchange vs covered/non-covered tank. Hhhhmmmm.

Weathersfield CT - nice town. I grew up in Trumbull CT, last resided in New Milford CT. Moved to GA about 6 years ago. Thanks again for the info.[/quote]

Please post any information you find on it as I'm not too sure about the science behind it and would like to know how it works myself.

I'm a big fan of Wethersfield. Having been born and raised in NY, it's perfect for me. It's a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll.....that was awful....sorry :)

I'll let you know what I find about the glass top issue. So far, it looks like a 50/50 split on to "cover or not to cover" the tank.

What Scoffer said (posted) - the protein skimmer should also aid in the carbon dioxide - oxygen exchange.
Also tanks (such as mine) that has a HOT filtration (Emperor 400) has mechanical filtration that also aerates the water. I think this phenomena will not have as much of an effect on the reef systems with constant water movement - thats my thought.

I will continue with my information gathering phase and get back to you with my findings.

It's not the town that's awful, it's the Donnie and Marie song that is [smiley=laugh3.gif]

Well, I guess I can be proud to say that one went way over my head - I forgot all about Donnie and Marie - thanks for reminding me [smiley=smartass1.gif]

BTW I like the pics of your tank!

Well I don't want to be the only one with that song stuck in my head :)

Thanks! I have to take new pics because the tank has changed a lot since I took those :)
