goniopora bleaching?

im not 100% that its goniopora or alveopora. its about 7 months old, i had it since it was pretty small. it was doing very well, until i purchased the current nova extreme pro 48 inch, 324w for my 55 gallon. today i just happened to notice that the coral was bleaching on the bottom right of it. since this coral bleaching basically just happened, i would like to know if it is reverseable. i know what coral bleaching is; symbiotic zooxanthellae within the corals tissue are expelled from stress. i find that my scooter blenny for what ever reason tends to swim in that part of the coral exactly where it is bleaching...so could that be possibly it? or could it be the stronger brighter light? i dose weekly with supplements and my parameters are pristine. also can i get a positive id on the coral? goniopora or alveopora, cause i do feed it planktonic matter as well as brine shrimp which it seems to take in. so any help will be taken!

I have two gunioporas, Ones pink yellow and ones green like yours. My wheni got it the back was dying a little but i got it tooken care.

 

so you had bleaching problems with goniopora? what did you do to get it back to good health?

 

Well, the scooter blenny could be nipping at it or otherwise irritating it, which is making it bleach, or it could be the lighting change. I would guess the lighting change. When did you change the lights, recently?

These guys have a notorious track record of failure, TBH.

 

What are your water parameters? How often do you do water changes?

 

It is a goniopora, they have 24 tentacles per polyp, alevopora has 12.

It actually looks pretty good. Polyp extension is a good indicator with these guys. If they are mad or doing poorly they do not expand as much.


It does appear to be somewhat bleached but not too badly. Goniopora like less than ideal water conditions IME. Some nitrates and phosphates seem to do them well.

And it is known as a " rent a coral " for a reason. There are some newer foods on the market that focus on feeding NPS corals that people are using with goniopora and have good luck with.

 

Yes they like "dirty" water, so if the water is too clean, that could be a cause. Or the new lights. Or it's just on its way out. They don't live too long in tanks.

 

well as for the lights, i bought the whole fixture just like 6 days ago, so everything is brand new. as for the water...the unfortunate that they like "dirty" water as im always clean with everything...the water parameters are pristine they usually never fluctuate, i check every week.

 

hey thanks for sharing it would wanna try it soon.. any side effects or precautions that I must be aware of before trying it???? my skin otherwise is very tolerant of all the chemicals!!

 

It's probably not getting enough food. How often do you target feed it and what do you feed. The light shock probably was another stressor.

AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!! Kacy, I'm so disappointed in you. (Just kidding ) This is one of my pet peeves (plus calling polyps "heads" and calling chaetomorpha "cheeto" and many others). They do NOT like dirty water. They like clean water but they like a LOT of food fed OFTEN. Once they've eaten, they want to go back to low Nitrates.
