    Hi everyone.

My tank is about 6 weeks old, through cycling, and now I have a huge algae bloom. (See before and after pics - change over 1 week).

I picked up a couple scarlet hermits from the LFS, but they're not doing anything. Just lazy buggars. I'm going back on friday to pick up some turbo snails and some of the blue hermits.

I know it's not good to introduce many new creatures at once, but I was wondering if I could just go ahead and put in a good few snails, couple more hermits, and a first fish?

Obviously the fish has to be hardy, and I need something that's going to eat this algae! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Tank size is 25 gallon. Water chemistry is where it should be.

    Thanks everyone.

I would maybe recommend a phos reactor and carbon if you dont already have so.. I believe an algae bloom is normal process that occurs during the cycling process. A skimmer and a fuge would also be a good recommendation. Hope that helps :)

Algae bloom is a normal part of the cycle... in fact there can be several as the tank matures. I'd recommend first talking the John at reefcleaners.org. He'll set you up.

Second, I agree on the phos reactor. Mine helped a lot.

Third, I would NOT recommend a fish for algae control. It'll starve once the algae goes away and if it isn't the fish you really want don't get it. Patience and maintaining water params will get it. Patience was hard for me, but it does work out as long as you are good on your water chemistry.

water parameters are where they should be? most likely they are not where they should be.. the algae is consuming in the phosphate so quickly it would almost be impossible to detect any phosphates with that much algae consuming it. manually remove the algae on the glass for now and get a clean up crew from john at reefcleaners.
a fish that is very good for algae that would be good for that size tank could be a blenny of some sort.. a blenny that will take prepared foods though, not just the lawnmore because most lawnmore blennies don't take prepared foods unless you get lucky.

Im 10 months in, and ive just now getting a slight upper hand on algae.. tang is going to be my next/last fish.. just ordered some more blue and red leg hermits will have them friday..

you need to have 0 phos. and 0-10 nitrates should be your goal. decease your lighting period a little too. flow is a must. water changes and cleaning glass, substrate and blowing rocks off helps. if you dont have a sump you can throw some type of macro algae in display tank.. this will help use up phos and nitrates so nussiance algae has to compete for those to grow..

Just curious if you started out with tap water? I'm not judging, I started with tap at the suggestion of the guy at the LFS who sold me my system. If so, switching to RODI will help.

seaweed blenny, (not a lawnmower blenny), is about all you can fit in there.

that hob filter doesnt look like its going to that tank justice down the road. IMHO.. maybe want to add a 10g sump with a skimmer and return pump in the near future.. that would make maintaining the tank easier with the add water volume and possible fuge w/ chaeto below the display tank... good luck.. first 6 months is the worst.. ::)
