I believe you have either t-12 or t-8 sized bulbs probly 15w-30w range.. and two of them.. thats a cheapo freshwater lighting fixture.. you can get corallike 20,000k bulbs for about $20 each online.. but that will only be good for reef fish and thats about it..maybe non-light or very low low low light demand corals.. if you want more than fish, and have $225 bucks to send just get a 4x54w t5ho fixture i.e. nova extreme pro from drfostersmith.com .. and those t5 bulbs with last you the next 10-12 months before have to change them out.. just my .2 cents.. Ive gone down this route when I first started.. spend a little now, at least your not throwing money away..

here's a recent thread with before and after pictures with the 4bulb nova fixture..

if you upgrade your bulbs in your existing t-8 or t12 fixture your lights will be like the before pictures but not as bright because you only have 40w and this guy has 110w. but color will be close if u use 10k corallife bulbs.

take a look and see what you think you want to do with this tank of yours.. and report back to us for further assistance.

here's what (2) 20w corallife 10,000k t12 bulbs looks like on my freshwater.. these bulbs are 6 months old (still good) note: 20,000k bulbs will be whiter.

now here's what real lights look like (t5s and pcs) 10k,12k,14k 6months old (still good)

sorry dont have a Full tank shot with all my daylights bulbs on.. but you can see how much brighter and whiter this saltwater fixture is over standard cheapo freshwater lights..

+1 on this post...I run 2 Marineland 4x54 fixtures and it is very sufficient!
