Try a FW dip. Gorgonians and Sea Fans may shed a tissue like skin-this is normal. This process is called Sloughing. You can even use a soft bristle tooth brush to help it along.

They do slough but if you look at her picture you can see its way beyond that. If the purple tissue falls off that portion is dead. That's the reason I suggested she try to clip off some of the live portion to try to save it.This is what it should look like.

This was an inch tall on my LR when I got it. Also if it is sloughing and staying closed it is not getting enough flow or it has a bacterial infection of some sort. With strong flow the sloughing takes place without you even knowing it. Rarely do I ever see mine closed and even when it does its only for a few minutes.

I had to magnify the pic a bit but i do see what your talking about. I would say bacteria also. Again a FW dip may help some but if you want to save any, I'd start by fragging the healthiest parts.

Yikes. You may want to inform your dive friend that it is illegal to take Gorgonians(most species) and Florida Fish and Wildlife will take his boat and dive gear for such offenses as well as a hefty fine. Also it is a bad idea to take things from the ocean and sticking them in your tank without at least quaranteening them.

i did it with a group buy. idk i think the guy "adopted" an area where he grows, frags, and sells coral. or something like that. everything we bought died. but the other people who got stuff, most of is doing fine. idk
