    so what type of fish do you recommend to cycle a tank....something cheap like a damsel so if it dies its ok....

    i was about to get some damsels to cycle mine and glad i read this thread...cause a tang is the main thing i want well tangs and clowns..

    I don't recommend using a fish at all. Just Live Rock, base rock, and a couple raw shrimp from the grocery store. Toss the raw shrimp in the tank and let them rot. The waste will kick start your cycle, then you just walk away from the tank for 6 weeks.

    Sounds boring I know but to me it's the best way. I know there are people who say use a damsel but I think there are plenty of posts on this thread that illustrate exactly why NOT to. I have my own damsel nightmare stories, too.

    My cat ate him in like 2 bites. My cat actually tries to get the fish through the glass I love watching it.

    This is my 2 cents on the death thing.

    I have been waiting for my LFS to get a Thompson tang for about 4 months. There is no way I was going to let that SoB damsel kill my 70 dollar fish.

    we understand the importance of catching him, all most of us are saying is plop him in a bucket then next time you go to the lfs trade him in or give him away

    im pretty sure everyone has trouble catchin the damsel fish that survive the cycle, that why i didnt use them :)
