Welcome to 3reef. You've come to the right place if you're starting your first reef tank. I found it best to just read through the threads for awhile and then start the setup. Feel free to ask away with any questions.

Generally the larger size you can get the better. With smaller tanks, it becomes harder to keep levels in balance. However, I started out with a 10gal and am doing just fine now. It basically comes down to what you can afford and have room for. IMO a 55gal would be a nice starting size.

Welcome to 3reef. There are no dumb questions unless it is one you know the answer to.

Get the largest system you can afford and/or fit into your abode.

is it a good idea to buy used stuff? like things on craigslist?
i see alot of people getting rid of their old setups to pay for a new and bigger setup. and the price seem to be pretty good.

also would be great if any one know LFS in the Bay Area that would be a good place to go to
    thanks!

You can get some good stuff from craigslist. Always go check it out before you buy it. If you don't like the looks don't get it. If it looks good test it at home before putting it to use. Clean it well also. We have many members from the bay who should be able to help when they get on. Just keep posting to keep this thread on the most active list.
