Hi all, i started my 75 gallon salt water aquarium 1 month ago, i started with a used aquarium, light and canister filter. 3" of sand and 25lb of rocks from the previous owner. 2 yellow tail were added in the second week and last week i added 1 domino, 2 clowns and arrow crab and some cleaning crew.
i will not keep the yellow tails once i finish the landscape. im planning to add 125 more lbs of live rocks (it is very hard to find nice rocks here for less than $10a #) and a sump with a skimmer before adding any more load to the system.
i just want to say 1 thing, 3reef threads appeared in any search i made regarding any issue related to reef aquariums with the most helpful tips. so thanks guys and keep up the good work.
last night i witnessed my arrow crab tearing a blister worm into pieces and he was devouring it like he found it after a year of starvation.

Welcome to 3reef. I am about an hour and 15 minutes south of Pittsburgh. Aquaworld has some nice frags. Elmers in Monroeville is hit or miss, but very helpful people. I am not a fan of Wet Pets because of their excessively high prices, but every so often they have something worth the $.

Have you tried finding dry rock for your tank? 3reef sponsor reefcleaners.org sells 50lbs of dry rock for $85. No water weight and no hitchhikers means more rock and no possible baddies entering your tank.

Thanks all for the warm welcome, i will post pics as soon as i get back home. nice to see another Yinzer here. ive been in all these places (elmer not recently, since it is on the other side of town) i live near robinson town center. ive been a fresh water aquarist for 7 years now and always wanted to start a reef aquarium. i may consider the 50lbs of dry rock it will cut the cost dramatically. wet pets have the best display and the highest price, the live rocks they have are the cleanest and the safest to add to your aquarium but $10-12/lb is too much i think.

I have 120lbs of live rock that I could sell you. At a much better price, I'm outside of philly.

I agree, I could never pay that much for LR. It is nice rock, but costs a lot. You could always just buy a few lbs to throw in to the tank to add diversity and more life. I would buy as much dry as possible.

I love Wet Pets' reef display, but miss the giant clam they had in it. I want the mystery wrasse they have in it now.

I have been wanting to check out Seahorse and a few other stores north of Pitt, but I always forget when I'm in the area. Once a month I make my rounds of the LFS in the Pitt area. I normally just buy frags, and some foods I have trouble getting in Morgantown, WV.
