I know this has been done before but that was 2 years, also want to put a bit of a twist on it, lets see pics of your tank lit up with the bulbs you use, no t5 alongside them just the halides.

At the moment i use 14k, thinking of changing to 20k her's my tank under 14k.

10K here. I supplement enough blue with actinics i think and i've seen Par ratings are better from 10K

what would be the best bulbs to have if you had 19" deep water and no t5's to shine actinic's in the tank, 14k or 20k

I think some pros use 10k because things in general grow faster with 10k.. Then when being displayed they usually look better under the bluer spectrums.

K values vary so much from one bulb manufacture to the other K is a hard way to judge them I have a aqualine Busk top flight expensive bulb 14K looks like a 10 K really I have a seen X-M's at 15 K be darker then a 20K Phoenix and so on it goes . I use 14 K SPS brand and they are almost like 20K Ushio.. I'd say if Ushio had a 18 K thats what they would be.. Very Hot K value..

Now if you want growth get Iwakies 65K's look just like real sunlight and last several yrs But the corals will about all turn brown I find the SPS 14's to give good growth and great coloration when lots of 420 NM actinic is supplied . Thats why we went about changing out all the 10K ushios and other bulbs around the shop .The SPS brand gave great growth and coloration .. Just based on the other real time /real world bulbs I have ever used under day to day working conditions except for the old Iwakies. But it makes selling the corals a little more difficult unless we colored them up first .. The aqualines 14 did a great job at growth and decient coloration but very expensive on the commercial level to change out several times a yr.

I have my 300 watt halides 12" above the water, and the leather coral still does not like the strong light even though i moved it to the bottom, would it benefit me to use 20k, i heard the light does not travel so deep as opposed to the 14k is this true?
