Yep. If you leave it in there, it will turn into sand. In fact, much of the sand in the world is created by Halimeda (and parrotfish eating corals). halimeda sand - Google Search

If you have a whole lot of it, it can cause problems. However, if that's your only plant, it doesn't really matter.

I have asked plenty of questions in here about that macro algae. I wouldnt worry about it. I have one in my tank that I moved towards the back of the tank. the one I have takes up most of the rock it is on, however I dont mind the look of it. plus it is beneficial to your tank for helping remove nitrate. worst case if it does get to big or you dont like it, you can put it into a sump/refug and save yourself the money of having to buy it. just my opinion based an answers from other 3reefers.

Interesting Curt, what are the potential problems? I was never told of any and never read of any, but since you say there may be problems, let me know as I have a 3" pile all along the one side of my tank.

They often engage in synchronized sporulation. I.e. if one plant goes sexual, all of them in the tank go sexual. Depending on the quantities you have, this can big a big deal. When a buddies frag tank had this happen, he lost a lot of his corals.

Note: This picture was taken AFTER a 50% waterchange. Here's where he was soooo mad he just threw it out in the back yard.

    thats from Halimeda?

To me it just looks like his Halimeda is dying. that stuff consumes a lot of calcium, if you constantly have low calcium, it will die.
