    Hi all,

I have a big enough heater for my 90g tank. It is set at 77 degrees. However, I put a thermometer in and it is only reading 72 degrees.

But, I have been adding water in, due to the evaporation that takes place, that is unheated. I'm guessing the reason for the temperature drop is because the water that I'm adding in is less than 77 degrees.

What are some solutions? Buying another heater?

    Thanks!

First, verify the heater is working.

You should heat the water before it goes in the tank - water change water. Evap water I do not heat, but you should not be waiting so long that replacing evap effects the temp, you are also effecting parameters (salinity as well).

Thanks for the reply. I'm still in the cycling stage. I add evap water on a daily basis so I'm confused on what you mean exactly.

Well, if you add evap water daily it shold not effect the temperature. Check that the heater is working. Water changes will come down the road after your cycle.

Check your heater, replace if its faulty.

We are hearing alot about heating problems on here the past couple of days. My advice is to get a 2 over sized heaters, one that you use on a regular basis, and one for heating top off/water change water. The second one is also then used as a back up for emergencies. Also get your self 2 termometers, Get one of the tried and true glass thermometers and a digital one, this way you have a few points of reference.
I have 2 heaters in my nano tank alone, in the sump both oversized, as well as 2 thermometers. I have never had a problem
