Is there any pros and cons. to keeping the heater in the sump vs. in the tank besides aesthetics?
I moved mine from the sump to the tank recently, but I like the look of having it in the sump and not seeing it

I'm have a 75g DT with a 30g sump and I run my heater in the sump with no problem. How is the heater controlled?

Sump is the way to go. Mine keep temp in DT rock solid. It is a Finnex 300w with built in digital controller, but getting ready to connect it to a RKL system for control.

Almost all (if not all) of those running a sump have the heater in the sump. That's kinda the point of the sump; a place for your equipment. :)

Functionally, it's fine. The only risk is if your return pump quit, then the DT wouldn't be heated.

I used to take it out of the sump and put it in the display when I would go away on vacation for a couple days. I guess I could do that.

But then there is the risk of a fish burning themselves on it in the DT...

    Pick your poison. :)
