Ok, so last week my heater slipped off the back wall of my tank and it seemed well except for a slight buzzing noise i could hear when it changed its on off cycles.. But i decided to get a new one anyway and keep the old one for water changes as i didn't have a spare.
I picked up a new one on sunday from my local shop and put it in my tank, set it to 26 and plugged it in. The light came on but then went off after about a minuet which i thought was normal as the temperature of my tank had risen to 27 while having the lights on for a few hours but then it started dropping to around 24. I had rubbish sleep that night, I got up 5 times to check it and it stabilized around 24 for a while and wasn't any higher in the morning. The temp was clearly set at 26 on the heater and when i adjusted it higher the light came on and went off again soon after. Do you think I should take it back and complain? I have put the old one back in for now and the temp has stayed around 26 as it used to..

I wouldnt take it back and complain, heaters are just one thing that you have to make sure they are atleast average heaters and the correct wattage, which normally isnt that hard to do, but some people will get cheap and buy really really crappy heaters, i had a really crappy one a while ago and it did the same thing yours did, would be stable and then it would shut off and quit heating the tank for a few hours and the Temp. would drop.

I would get a new one..Marineland stealth heater is what i have, i have on in my 14g biocube and it keeps it stable all the time at 76-75 degrees. You have to tune it to the right temp. So basically i had know how warm my tank was naturally(windows, my room temp, with lights) and then just tune my heater to where the tank would be at..I have it on 72 i think, and it keeps it very stable..

I had this same problem with a brand new Finnex Heater. It was a bad temp sensor in the heater. I told the retailer, and contacted the manufacturer. I had a new heater 2 days later from the retailer. Sometimes new equipment breaks too.

I love my marine land stealth although the first one I bought had a bad temp gauge, and would never turn on.

Exchange it to be on the safe side,
