Hi , Can you have too much "heat"?? I want to replace my heater on a 75 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump -- it currently has a 300W ( which i dont trust ) Should I buy 2 - 300 W to replace it? or 2 - 200 W ?? Does it matter?

    Along the same lines -- if I have a 40 gallon atnk and they recoomend a 150 W , can I use a 300 w in it?

    Thanks in advance

I don't see why you couldn't, but then again, I don't see why you would. It seems like a waste of money to buy a bigger heater than you need.

the rule of thumb is 4.5-5w per gallon. 75 x 5 = 375w, 600w would be a little much, but if the temperature fluctuates in the room the aquarium is in alot, you can go with 600w, the 2- 200w would work perfectly. One on either side of the aquarium would work good.

Maybe if your tank temp fluctuates a lot but I don't see the need for 2 300w heaters. I have a 125 and only have 1- 300w heater for it and it only kicks on when it gets below 66 in the house. The 3-250w MH are pretty much my heaters.

The reason some folks want two heaters is cheap insurance. Without a heater, a lot of tanks can drop in temp way too much before it can be discovered and replaced.
