I bought a marineland shatter proof heater with the indicator that glows red when on. I have it set at 82 but my water remains at 75, and it rarely changes from green to red.

    Is it defective?

Quite possible that the heater itself is defective, however make sure you're heater is the correct size for your tank...

As stupid as it sounds when I go shopping for fish stuff I get all exited and rattled lol. I tend to not pay super close attention, as I bought a heater to big for my 46g When I 1st started it up! LOL.

Marineland Stealth Pro. I have the same one. A 250w on my 29g. I have not had a problem with it.

The light is red when heating to the desired temp. It turns green when at that temp. If the temp changes, the heater heats up again, thus turning the light red.

I had a digital thermometer too. It would always say my temperature was too high. 2-3 degrees too high, to be exact. I got an Aqua Controller Jr. with a temp probe, & guess what? My heater was working properly the entire time.

Most likely it is your thermometer. From what I can tell, the Stealth Pro seems to be spot on.

As RG stated, it may also be a defective one. If so, you could prob get a free replacement if you call the manufacturer(Marineland).

    +1

Check with a different thermometer. Or a third, or even fourth. find at least two that give the same exact reading to determine how far off the heater may be.

    Cheers

I have two thermometers both have same temp. It's 250w for my 72gallon.

    The water feels cold.

Should I try to get a digital thermometer. ?

On the box it says it's meant for up to 75 gallons. If it were too small wouldn't it constantly stay on?

It doesn't ever seem to turn on to heat. Always glows green

I would make sure those thermometers are either a glass with alcohol, or a true digital (not the stick-on type garbage).
