I put my 250w heater in my sump yesterday and got a major temp swing. Where in the sump do you place your heater? Do you have an additional heater in your DT? My set-up is in my sig. TIA;)

by "major temp swing" do you mean the temp of the tank increased from what it was (below the set point) to a higher temp (set point)?

If so, then that's what the heater is supposed to do. Now instead you will not see large swings as the tank will remain at the thermostat's set point. Also, seeing as you are well North, you likely do not have to worry about your tank becoming too warm.

    Hope this helps!

    Temp swing? Explain please.

I have a 350 watt heater in my sump near the return pump. My tank maintains its temperature very well. 79.1-79.3

Place the heater in the return section. Definitely give specifics on the temp swing.

Personally, if you only have one heater, I would not put it in the sump. If your return pump fails, you have no heat in your tank.

I put my heater between the baffles.

Good idea! I need to move one of the heaters and never thought about the baffles. Wouldn't that restrict the flow through the sump though?

    Good idea on the baffles.

Magnus if you are not running the water through the sump at the sumps capacity then I think it would be no problem. I use two heaters that are about half of what is needed for one heater for my system.

I have my heaters in my overflows so that way the water is always consistent inside. My tank stays around 78-79 degrees faithfully.
