The common practice is 4 to 5 watts per gallon.. But like the lighting 5 watts per gallon rule of thumb does not always work :D Is it a lot colder in the room where you want to heat your tank to 80 degrees or is it almost always close to the temperature you like?? Some people also recomend 2 heaters instead of one in case if failure. This is the one I purchased for my 90 gallon tank. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=46311&item=4340184982&tc=photo It will probably be used January to March only.

ok, do you think that'll be enough power for the 90 gallon tank?

Sure, unless you let your tank room get down to the low 60's.
The larger the volume of water the more temperature change it will take to lower it significantly. You can always add another, but I don't think you'll have to.

Ild go with the metal heater (or an ebo-jager....now just jager again) for durability and the external temperature control that most of them come with. I am highly partial to ebo's as my dad's had the same one since he was in the navy (3 years before me!) and just now replaced it just to be safe. I just bought a metal heater for my trigger's tank. Oh ya, sump the heater and buy it oversized (300-400 watts or two 150-200's) that way warm water flows into the tank and gets better dispersion rather than radiating from one side and relying on powerheads.
