I have had a 60 Gal tank for about 5 years now. and I just set up a 12 Gal that I got from my mom.
If i could give any advice to anyone starting out don't use tap water. I tried it with the support of one of my LFS and it took me years to get the nitrates to a decent level which ended up being very expensive $$$$$. :-[ things are better now. My 12 Gal has worked out great. And I don't go to that store anymore.
The 60 gal is much better now but there are still a few challenges i am working out.

Welcome aboard!~ I used tap, but we have well water and have all kinds of 'gizmos' to filter our water. So far, no problems!

Glad to see you found way here.

In general, very good advice on using tapwater...esp in a newer tank, when you may not be sure of where water param problems come from.

Am lucky to live in place where there is no problem using tapwater at all.

I first used to go to trouble of getting water from local aquarium (Seattle aquarium provides this service to local SW enthusiasts)

    Then went to RO/DI...

But over time, found I did not even need that.

I do use a water conditioner, but that is it.

Not recommended until you know for sure.
