    Hello,

I'm a new member to the group. I've had several years of successful fresh water tanks and want to move on to saltwater. I purchased a red sea max tank and I'm currently doing research on what I can have in my aquarium and I'm always looking for advise. I have yet to set it up and will start my water/live sand cycling in May. Yes, I'm moving slow, but I want to do all of my research to set myself up for success.

I do have a few questions. Over the winter we had a bad storm which knocked out our power for about a week. I know if my aquarium was up and running then, everything would have died. Does anyone have a solution or a fix for a power outage? I think generator is about the best answer.

What corals are good candidates for a small tank? Is a lemon tree coral a good choice for my tank?

    Thank you,
    Nate

    Welcome to the Club!
Nothing wrong with moving slow, if fact as you research you will find that most everyone will tell you that is the way to do it. If you rush it you will regret it later!

Your power was out for a week, that must have been a real PITA!

As far as power outages go, yes a generator is the best way to go if you can afford one.

As far as corals, it all depends on your lighting. I have currently have corals the following,

Soft Corals - Mushrooms, Ricordeas, various Zoa's, various Xenia, Green Tree leather, A small Devils hand, toadstools, Kenya tree, Green Finger Leather.
LPS Corals - torch, Fox, Hammer, 3 different candy canes, 2 frog spawns, Black and orange sun corals, a small green and gold brain coral
SPS - Orange, dark green, Lime green Montipora's, Pink and Purple Birds nest, Pink Stylophora, and an unidentified Acropora.

All these are in small tanks either a 10, 16 or 20 long all using T5 lighting. You can almost see monti's and the bird nest grow they are growing so fast. Some of these corals are high maintenance like the sun's, some are hard to keep like the Acro and Birds nest. but basically you can keep almost anything as far as I know as long as you keep up with water changes and feedings.

Sorry! I hope I haven't bored every one with my rambling on here. Good luck!

Best of luck to you as you try to gather all the information you can to better your chances of success in the marine hobby!
Generators are a good thing along with battery powered air pumps!

Salutations! Glad to see you found way here and to the SW side of fish keeping!

Loads to learn, but sounds like you are well on your way.

Here is a possible alternative to a generator...Post: Emergency Power

But if you live in an area prone to such outages...have a plan in place!!!

Let us know how your system is doing & post some pics.
