actually with goldfish the freezer is probably the best way, because carp go into a hibernative state below 45 degrees, which is why you never feed your koi on cold days.

but for other fish i knew a marine biology graduate who said snapping the back is the fast way. ive tried this method before if you screw up you fell really bad. ive also tried the alkaseltzer culling method, that was very bad too as it took two packs to put down a silver dollar(came with a tank), that my friend couldnt give away do to the scars from previous living condition.
its probably faster just to decapitate the fish with a knife.

And if anything gets cold (as a human in a freezing lake) things just go numb.

im sorry for you bad luck. but i heres a page on setting up a goldfish tank, so you can check and make sure your goldfish are getting the best possible care and avoid anymore losses. your tank does look small, and your fish kinda thin.
GoldfishConnection.com - Putting it all together!

remember just because there cheap doesnt mean they should get any less care then other pets.

My fish was fed every day, it was just normal goldfish food, dont think I didnt look after it the best I could because I did, and if I didnt care I wouldnt of come on here to ask advice. Thanks for everyones advice but I dont think I am cut out for owning a fish and will stick to horses and dogs instead.

Thanks again and I will do whats right for fishy.

i was did not mean to imply you were neglecting it on purpose simply that the reality of goldfish care is alot different then the way media portrays a lone fish in a bowl, and alot of times people have trouble accepting the extra equipment they need for the tank. anyway i hope you reconsider your decision to quit the fish hobby, as its not difficult if you give the fish a bigger then necessary tank(as problems will take longer for problems to build up and give you more time to react)

your right, my little fella was kept just in a fish bowl, bought him from a garden centre with a starter kit, he lasted for two years and I had no idea that I was doing anything wrong, but I am an animal lover and get quite upset if i accidently step on a snail and would never knowingly cause pain to any animal. thanks for all your advice and I hope fishy will be happy swimming in a big pond in the sky.

I'd still like to see the scientific evidence stating that fish feel nothing when they are put in a freezer where the water temperature plummets so quickly.

I know people always suggest doing this- but I think its just one person hearing it from another- and continue passing it on as so.

Let your aquarium's temperature plummett down to subzero temperatures and tell me your fish dont react in a painful looking way... why would a bag of water in the freezer be any different?

My opinion: break their neck/spine or smash it with a hammer. (Sounds inhumane does it? It's instant, and the fish has no idea that it's about to happen). In the old days, when you used to have to put down a dog yourself, you wouldn't put it out in the freezing cold believing that "it would just slowly fall asleep".... you'd shoot it, cause it's instant, and thats the only way to do it.

Btw, did some research, and the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) has guidelines when it comes to animal euthanasia.... which you can find here...
    http://www.avma.org/issues/animal_welfare/euthanasia.pdf
Pages 23-24 of 39 discuss these matters, and in fact, they DO NOT recommend the piss-poor advice of tossing your fish in a freezer stating that it can in fact cause pain if ice crystals form under skin/scales (that is unless you are able to anesthetize the fish prior to freezing- which unless you have some type of chemical veterinary sedation of some sort- not a good idea). It does state, however, that severing the cervical spine and decapitating the fish are recommended methods of euthanizing fish.

And there you have it folks. Stop telling people to turn their fish into living icecubes- its not as comfortable and pain free as you've all been touting it to be.

I read this, and would have to disagree. With warm water fish like most marine fish, the fish will die long before the water gets to freezing. So the ice crystals wouldn't start to form till long after the fish was dead, and would not feel it. As for taking them out and chopping there head off, NO WAY am I going to do that.

Edit: With that being said I have never used this method.
