You should really be testing your water for ammonia/nitrites/nitrates every day or two during the first 4-6 weeks depending on how your cycle is going. That way, you can do water changes if you realize that something is way too high.

Unfortunately, the poor blue damsel gets abused like this too often however. And that is why I believe in a fishless cycle.

Ok so yes i may be a rookie but everyone on this site up to this point and from my lfs has said that a damsel will be fine to put in their during cycling due to being a hardy fish. Wells guess not it ended up losing the fight. I am just going to keep my tank cycling without any fish. Thanks

This is one of the most commonly used methods of cycling a tank. At present it is slowly going away. Some people don't have the patience and some do. I am not one of them with the patience. There are tons of ways a guy could bash on another for different methods. You like your steak rare and I like mine cooked. As for the fish again, probably suffering from the cycling process. It's part of the hazard of using fish to cycle.

I say shame on anyone who thinks putting a fish in a bad environment is a good idea when there are way more desirable ways of cycling a tank.

putting fish in a tank that has not cycled is a risk. Using damselfish just to cycle is probably not the best idea since they are very hard to catch, youll end up having to take out all the LR in the tank.:-/

I agree. The tank is still cycling, have patience my friend and let it cycle naturally. I'm not going to bash you for how you did it, different strokes ya know. Anyway, my yellow tail blue damsel is almost bullet proof. I kept loosing chromis after my tank cycled and I blame the damsle for it. He's pretty aggressive towards same sized fish. Might not be the best mix to have in a tank IMO. Good luck with the tank and as someone else on here once said "Go slow, let it grow."
