While cleaning of the SB is debatable. IME disturbing the SB releases alot of nutrients into the system all at once as well as disturbing the bacteria living in it. Keep in mind also the way Macro algae exports nutrients is by you actually trimming it every so often to export them. The algae locks it up you dispose of it.;)Good luck and hope to hear good results.

I agree with Vinny on vacuuming a sand bed that is that deep. And I totally understand about the SO not listening LOL.

Ummm, I just skipped to the end, but has the nitrate issue been solved? I was thinking, you didn't have the issue until you put the sump in. Was this a custom sump, and if so, what kind of silicone sealant did you use?

    edit___

ok, just caught up now, and nothing is mentioned about the sump specs exactly. Vinny gave the best advise about not disturbing the SB, which IME will cause stress in the system. What kind of sump are you using, a commercially manufactured type, or a DIY?

well just got everything done... Separate refugium loaded with chaeto algae... And did a fifty gallon wc... The sump btw is a max flow model four commercially manufactured 500 bucks a pop... After all of this I waited an hour and tested at 10ppm... Whoo hoo! Prior to the water change we were testing 80 and earlier today it was forty... I am going to test again in the morning and do another wc if necessary tomorrow evening... The SO has been scolded severely and I told him I threw him to the wolves by tattling on him... He was obviously not going to admit I was right but he refused to touch the tank today! If it means I do it all myself then so be it... But it won't last long lol...

Glad to hear it is working for you but slow down a little. I wouldn't do another WC for at least a week. Changing parameters even Nitrates too fast can be bad for corals and fish in your system. Nothing good happens fast in this hobby.Go slow let it grow!!Thats our fearless leaders motto and good advice.;) Good luck to you and your fishy friends.
