help please.

    just bought a house and there is a 125 gln saltwater tank in it. the people i bought it from say son moved out 2yrs ago and just left tank. since then they have been replacing water with tap water.what do i need to do to get this running again. oh ya should tell you 140lbs live rock,vho lighting,30gln sump and protien skimmer. They just let everything die.:confused:

    WOW!!!! Wish i moved into a house with that! Great size. Good luck and keep posting on your progress!!! Start with making water with a RO/DI system and get the tank cycling. Do lots of reading!!

    so iwill need start cycle over again,tank was never drained. they always kept pumps running.just was adding tap water when water evaporated.Do i need to empty whole tank or just start water changes with Ro/DI?

    Whats the condition of the tank? algae? Corals, etc!

    You may not have to cycle again, but if there hasn't been anything in there to feed the beneficial bacteria then you will most likely have to cycle again. Pics will really help us out though.

    There is no Algae....water is clear....they havent even turned lights on since son left,just kept pumps going and tap water for evaporation in...only thing in tank is Rock

    Sounds like you just need to cycle again to be on the safe side. How long has it been since there something alive in there? Also, make sure to check the salinity as well. It may be really low/high.

    Personally, Id strip the tank, rinse the rocks good with RODI water, dry them out for a few days, clean everything with bleach water, get new sand, And start over. A small price to pay for piece of mind and other issues that might pop up when lights and food hit the tank!

    This is true. I would be worried about using bleach, but Cosmo has always given me good advice.

    Do you know how the system has been set up all together?
