I will definitely give the big water change a go (filling up my mixing station as we speak)
I did try a product called phozdown and it worked temporarily but I guess with all the algea still in the tank it didnt do much in terms of sustaining. the chaeto is indeed healthy and constantly growing, so take some of that out? I will give that a try. while on the topic, is it possible to use my calcium reactor which has been offline for months with biopellets? (after I clean it out of course.)

I am not familiar with phozdown. I am not familiar with how a cal reactor is setup so I cannot say that you can use it for a Biopellet reactor. I know that there are easy mods to use a phosban reactor for Biopellets.
Yes removing some of the cheato will allow the cheato to absorb more. I have actually picked up a ziplock bag of cheato from a local fellow reefer for free because it was in need of some trimming.
A large water change and more frequent changes will definitely help your system. I know when I was having issues, I started doing weekly changes at 20% or so and things gradually got under control.
    I wish you the best.

Thank you for the all the help, more than I hoped for. One more request, could you point me in the direction of a good DIY tut for a bio pellet reactor?

I actually can't. Because I built my DIY reactor (in my 80 to 125g build thread, don't have the link set up if ypu want to check it out) and I just did it based on a phosban reactor. I'm sure someone will chime in with a good tut video.
Good luck. I am actually in the process of finishing my DIY ato till I can get a tunze osmilator.

I'm sure there are different ones out there on the web or even in this forum. Just try doing a search. I'm sorry I don't know of a specific one, I'm horrible with DIY

No worries, I took out my calc reactor gave it a clean and realized it is pretty easy to convert to a pellet reactor, is there a certain rate of flow that the reactor should have I'm not sure my calc reactor pump will be strong enough

All the pellets need to be tumbling. That is an easy search on YouTube and you can gather an idea what amount of flow they need. I don't have specifics especially with your cal reactor.

I wouldn't convert an expensive cal reactor to biopellets..
