    Hi,
I need some help. I'm building a sump and the sections from left to right go refugium, return, and skimmer. My overflow will drain into the skimmer and refugium section. I just am confused as to how I should build my baffles. I want to make sure the flow is very slow in the refugium but that the water still gets circulated and goes to the return. I also want to minimize noise. I'd really appreciate Anyones opinion or expertise, thanks again. It's a 29g sump for a 60g main.

Just use a ball valve on the refugium side to regulate the flow.

Ya but do the baffles have to be built a certain way for good flow from each end and to keep a certain amount of water in each section? Or just start them from the bottom and just go up a certain height? Thanks for response.

I've built a completely different type of sump, that is very inexspensive and works well.

But, I've seen lots of designs, and from what your goals are,
put the return section in the middle
Splint the return, so a bypass with a ball valve goes to the refugium section,
and the main flow goes to the skimmer section- don't put a valve on this side
This way, your fuge has less flow than the skimmer section.

Goggle it, you'll see lots of pictures, etc.

Personally, I like mine, but thats just me

Figure out the skimmer your going to be running first. Then find the recommended depth it runs it and make your baffle that high.

heres the design my 75 gallon uses. Its a 40B sump and acrylic baffles using GE silicon got the tank new from petco during there dollar per gallon sale they have semi annually.

Going by your skimmer height is one way , I prefer to go as high as possible to allow more sump volume. And just make a stand out of eggcrate or acrylic for the skimmer. That way you are maximizing sump volume and it allows you to have more skimmer options.

I would advise to not do that. If the return pump fails,or power goes out the water is going to back drain out the return lines and the drain to a point. If you don't have space in the sump, it's going on the floor whether you like it or not.

Do not use all the space in the sump Im using 26 gallons in that 40 breeder. You need the extra space trust me! I shut of my pump to feed and the wate fills almost up to the refug baffle. If I did it your way it would overflow. Not a good idea.

I get your wanting more water volume but I would take 15 less gallons over 30 on the floor every day of the week, twice on Sunday.

When I said as high as possible I meant allowing space for you dt overflow with everything off ,I should have clarified.

It's all good brother, I had a feeling you were aware of the space but the OP might not have, good reminder never hurts. Lol
